shameless self-promotion for all
Mar. 30th, 2024 06:10 pmokay, I’ve had a rotten week (nothing at all serious, I had a corona shot and it always gives me a multi-day headache, which wiped out a day and a half altogether this time plus subsequent tail-end), so this post is very self-indulgent. Comment and link me to two or three of your fics (or artwork, DW/elsewhere posts, anything you made, I always just think of fic first because it’s what I do) that you feel could use more attention, or that are among your favorites in general, I’m not fussy. I will guarantee, knock wood, to comment on at least one work in each comment within…let’s say within April, that seems realistic. Also feel free to ramble about each linked work in your comment!
Here are mine, then. I’ve been fortunate enough to get a good reception for all of them, so I can’t really say they didn’t get enough attention, but I feel like they’re the odd ones out that I’m particularly fond of.
The Language of the Enemy (The Rebel, 6K, Chen Moqun/Lin Nansheng, E)
This is hard to ask people to read because a) it’s a small fandom consisting of a 40+-episode Chinese Republican-era TV drama; b) the fic is unlikely to make sense if you don’t know the canon, but it’s also slightly canon-divergent; c) it’s just on the far side of explicit (so maybe too much sex for people who prefer it without, and not enough for people who prefer it with). Even so I think it’s one of the best things I’ve written.
Two Hearts (Guardian, 35K, Zhao Xinci, T)
Not only is this twice as long as the next longest fic I’ve ever written, it’s set post-canon with the canonical character deaths, meaning that Shen Wei and Zhao Yunlan only appear in memory, and it focuses on the, er, not exactly universally beloved Zhao Xinci. For whatever reason I have always had a lot of Zhao Xinci feelings, though, and I needed to mop them up with something like this fic, which also contains a lot of discussion of and by other secondary characters and original characters, as well as Dixing and Haixing worldbuilding that crept in around the edges.
Internal Autonomies (Vorkosiverse, 13.5K, original characters, T)
This is a much older fic set in the Vorkosiverse but featuring entirely original characters, other than in reference. All worldbuilding and character-building and I’m still very fond of it.
Give me yours?

Date: 2024-03-30 11:22 am (UTC)Here are three of mine, all for the same fandom! It's a small fandom, but usually decently active; these are some fics of mine that I feel like slipped through the cracks somehow and never got any comments despite being fics I think turned out pretty well.
Quanzhi Gaoshou | The King's Avatar is about esports! It's set in more-or-less modern China and focused on the players of a fictional game, Glory, and the struggle to become champions. Not that any of these fics are about the esports, but it is the context for what's going on.
Experimental Agenda (6k, E, Zhang Jiale/Zhang Xinjie)
This is a PWP. Office blowjob, kink negotiation, established relationship. I'm very fond of this rarepair and also of this kind of smut. Set a decent ways into canon, but also it's pwp, you don't need that much context. The two characters involved are teammates, but one of them only transferred teams recently.
feeling the beat under your skin (6.2k, E, Ye Xiu/Wang Jiexi)
Also PWP but with slightly more plot! First time/hookup. Set pre-canon, during Wang Jiexi's debut year. A lot of feelings about dancing and bodies and chasing desire.
Snow Days (2.4k, G, gen)
This is post-canon gen fluff between four of my favorite female characters in this canon. Go on a vacation! Have an elaborate snowball fight! Enjoy being around friends!
(the first two I suspect were just not the kind of pwp people are looking for, and the last one suffers from both being gen and being about women. it's a shame how that works!)
Bonus, because these two are long and I do not feel a need for more comments/attention; I'm just proud of them and want to talk about them since I'm talking about QZGS fics anyway.
Castles in the Sky (36.6k, G, Chu Yunxiu+Ye Xiu, Chu Yunxiu & Misty Rain)
My fake dating to queerplatonic marriage fic, which is about the esports because alongside the relationship arc it's also a character study of Chu Yunxiu and her team. These are minor characters in the novel who have always fascinated me, and I loved taking this chance to think about their arc through all of canon and beyond. Lots of worldbuilding and OCs and technically-not-OCs (characters who were named but not given a character).
Not a Spiral but a Spring (44.6k, T, Fang Xuecai & Thunderclap)
The working title for this was "Thunderclap s9". This is basically canon-compliant. It is about a team that never gets focus but is always on the sidelines of the story. In season nine, their captain (who's led them for years) trades himself to another team and is replaced by one of the only characters in this canon pretty much the entire fandom dislikes. This fic is me going "so what was that like for Thunderclap?", because canon doesn't consider it much, and building the whole team into characters so that I could answer that question.

Date: 2024-04-01 11:19 am (UTC)I understand why there's so little fic for this fandom, but I wish there were more! There's so much interesting stuff to be done with the characters.
I know just enough about The King's Avatar from osmosis to read fic for it, I think--I keep meaning to read the novel! I'll look forward to your fics, including the longer ones (I love ensemble fic...).

on your way up to the light -- a Les Mis canon divergence AU, probably my favorite fic I've ever written despite the fact that it's largely just an essay about the parallels between Eponine and Jean Valjean in fic form
The Barkosigan Saga: Mirror Dog -- okay this one's just very silly but I feel obliged to link the "PBS television show Wishbone does Mirror Dance" crossover I wrote for Yuletide one year

Date: 2024-03-30 12:55 pm (UTC)I really need to find the time to properly read your Zhao Xinci fic! I've had that on my list for so long ... /o\
As for my own fic, I've been really proud of two of my recent Guardian fics, and they could definitely use some more attention since they never got recipient comments. But I think you've read them already, so, no worries if you're not feeling it!
Echoes Woven Into Light (~6k, Shen Wei/Zhao Yunlan) is a time travel fic where Zhao Yunlan from episode 37 is thrown back to the Hanga arc and meets the Shen Wei of that time, which was a lot of fun to write! It's also an episode 40 fix-it in which things happen exactly as seen on screen, but everbody lives anyway! Hallows shenanigans and happy endings - and I'm still really pleased with the fix-it idea that makes it all come together.
A Thread as Red as Blood (~5k, Shen Wei/Zhao Yunlan) is set immediately after Shen Wei and Zhao Yunlan return from the YOHE wormhole, and features a first time and a conversation about the time loop, into which I put a lot (A LOT) of my time loop feelings.
For a third, let's say my 520 Day fic from last year: Darkness Spilled Before Our Bed (~7k, Shen Wei/Zhao Yunlan) is a kitchen scene aftermath with canon divergence. It's a dive into both their heads, and because I like angst, I push them together and ramp up the tension and misunderstandings even more rather than letting them step away at that point, making things even worse before I make them better. *g*
(I would have put my new Grimm fic here, which is definitely underappreciated because it's a tiny OT3 in a not-that-large fandom, but I don't think you know Grimm, and I don't tend to write the kind of fic that can easily be read without canon knowledge. *g* Also, it's a long fic, so it would have been a bit much anyway!)

I will look forward to (re)reading the Guardian fics <3 (also appreciate the link to the Grimm one; I like reading canon-blind in certain contexts, and I like threesomes!).

Date: 2024-03-30 04:01 pm (UTC)Two personal favorites:
[podfic] a quiet light, written by
This is still one of my favorite podfics, though it's older by now. I am not usually much of one for effects or music, but I thought Bluedreaming's dreamy story made an excellent fit for the soothing music of the soundtrack, and I'm proud of my tracking and the end effect, which I think makes the most of the narrative strengths of my voice. A couple people have told me they use it for entertainment when they have migraines, which makes me very happy and also makes me hope it might help your headache a little!
They Can Nearly Talk (Silmarillion and James Herriot, 51.6k, original characters, G)
My first true crossover, and I am very pleased with how it turned out -- I think it's gently humorous and within an (Olympic) shot-putter's throw of Herriot's charm and sentiment. Because of the OC-ness, I think it's very suitable to be read canon-blind for both Tolkien and Herriot, though knowing both helps. It's full of lots of things I love about the place where I grew up, without being too self-indulgent, and if I say so myself it's educational about horse coat color genetics. Now, it's very long, so if I had to pick one chapter, I'd pick chapter 4, where I feel like I managed a piece of true fanfictional accomplishment, where the emotional resonances or plot work best if you have the intertextual knowledge and connection to the source material, but it still stands on its own as a piece of good writing.

Date: 2024-03-30 04:05 pm (UTC)I loved Two Hearts. Now that I've seen The Rebel, I'll have to read The Language of the Enemy.
The story whose failure most hurts me is Turned Within to Stone, a Trek story about the purported death by "natural causes" of my beloved Spock. This is my Ur fandom.
If Trek is not your thing, try Dorothy Sayers: A Wimsey Epiphany, a story about Miss Climpson and the Wimseys at Duke's Denver (fic or podfic, if you're feeling especially adventurous).
This is a very generous offer. I hope you find some things you enjoy amongst all these comments!

Date: 2024-03-30 04:13 pm (UTC)I'm a fandom-blind reader but definitely interested in that fic for The Rebel!
As for mine -- I believe you might've read this, but the lightness of a foreign sky is a post-canon 4k++ fic for Zen Cho's Black Water Sister, and the first fic written for the fandom. (and as a bonus: some meta I've written about the book itself, in a tumblr ask!)
The other piece I'm proud of is this Mikasa/Annie art for SNK: Mikasa and Annie sharing a quiet moment in bed
warning for implied nudity but nothing's very NSFW here.
This is a really kind and great idea!

I have read it and liked it a lot! I'll look forward to rereading, not to mention checking out the meta.
(also I'm always so impressed with people who can do both art and fic; I can't even draw stick figures lol)

Date: 2024-03-30 06:10 pm (UTC)I've been meaning to read your Zhao Xinci fic, so thank you for the reminder. :) I started it a while back but thought "I need to come back to this when I can read it more attentively." I should get on with doing that. <3
And I wish so much that I could read the Rebel fic you linked! I've loved all your other Rebel stories, and coming from you, "one of the best things I've written" is certainly a strong recommendation. I love the title, and for this pairing I can easily understand why fics would tend toward mature/explicit -- their canon interactions don't exactly give off SFW vibes! Unfortunately even the first line of that TLTR clip you posted a couple weeks ago was already too sexy for me. XD I'm guessing this one isn't the kind of fic where there's just a brief sex scene in the middle that can be skipped, but for what it's worth, if you do think there are any parts of it that could be read separately from the M+ rated elements, let me know and I will absolutely read those parts. Though I know most stories don't work that way, so I totally understand if the higher-rated/sexual elements are integral to the work as a whole.
I think you've read all my longer fics in fandoms I know we share, but here's one Guardian fic (well, drabble) you might not have seen, plus a couple of other short things as options since you asked for three:
The Lantern. (Guardian drabble, 100 words, Zhang Shi, G)
This one naturally gets fewer hits than most of my other works due to the combination of being a drabble and being about Zhang Shi. ;)
Sleep (Guardian art, Shen Wei/Zhao Yunlan, G)
Sketchy close-up pencil art of Shen Wei and Zhao Yunlan sleeping.
After Troy (Greek Mythology, 768 words, Ajax/Teucer, T, content warning: incest between half-brothers)
A narrative poem in dactylic hexameter (aka epic verse), written for the Fic in a Box exchange. My recipient had suggested the idea of a Homeric epic verse poem for this pairing, and I'd never tried writing that verse form before, but felt suddenly compelled to try it. Given the way English stress patterns work (which is not like Greek!), I found it pretty challenging, but I enjoyed it and was pleased with the result.

Re the Rebel fic, it's very kind of you to be specific about the issues. I suspect this is one that just won't work for you--it would be pretty possible to skip the specific references to what's happening below the waist, there isn't much in the way of explicit description of that kind, and I'd be glad to partition those off for you any time you want, but there's a lot of, mm, subtext and mood throughout? I'll assume it probably won't be for you and if you feel otherwise let me know :)
I'll look forward to the nice varied range of works you linked! Don't hesitate to add other fics if you want to prompt me to reread, something I always enjoy.

Date: 2024-03-30 08:02 pm (UTC)I wrote a couple of ensemble casefics (with pre-relationship ChuGuo content) early on that I'm fond of. One of them was never beta read and it kinda shows, but it still has elements I'm proud of, like Zhu Hong taking on snake form as a plot point. The Netwielder. In the other one I wanted to explore some of the ramifications of Xiao Guo's baton (I MEAN HIS SHOCK STICK, THE STORY IS PRETTY MUCH RATED G.) The Blue Man.

Date: 2024-03-30 10:11 pm (UTC)For a moment, Chen Moqun thinks of putting himself entirely in Lin Nansheng’s hands, of granting Lin Nansheng the same tested, trusted obedience he once received. The idea brings with it an instant of sheer longing, blinding like a sudden shaft of sunlight in a darkened room, gone just as quickly.
GOD. I understood very little of the references to canon, but the picture you draw of their relationship is so vivid, it was easy to see it all play out anyway. It's just all really beautiful. *gestures helplessly*
I hope you feel better soon, you deserve only good things for turning your crummy week into something positive and kind. <3
Two things from me:
As always, I feel my RPF could be appreciated more, but whenever I say that I automatically add all the good reasons why it has a much smaller audience than my Guardian fic, and then I stomp my little foot and demand more eyes on it anyway. It never works. 😄 If you're near, it's quiet--my very first fic after not writing anything for over a decade, the longest thing I've written to date, my first fic about a Chinese drama/Chinese actors--was surprisingly popular when I posted it, and none of the sequels even come close in terms of hits and kudos and comments. I think I actually got better as I kept adding to the series, but. Alas.
It would make me happy if you gave give me moonlight a read, which is pretty explicit poly fic (Bai Yu/Zhu Yilong at its core) with some gentle D/s elements and told from the POV of a quasi-OC. In second person. I mean, I can 100% understand why it doesn't have an audience beyond the three people I wrote it for, but also. I think it's really good.
For something way less horny, if you don't mind listening to fanmixes, you might enjoy my Shen Wei mix? I've grappled with the non-popularity of fanmixes in all of my fandoms for many years now, and like with the RPF I understand why it's bound to have a much smaller audience than fics, and the Shen Wei mix actually got way more kudos than most of my other mixes (and three whole comments!), but. I rarely listen to my own fanmixes again once I've posted them, but I still listen to this one sometimes, because (I think) it's really good and it gives me Shen Wei feelings. So I'm putting it here.
Thank you for reading all of this. ❤️

Date: 2024-03-31 01:03 pm (UTC)Here are the two short, gen Untamed stories I'm most proud of:
neither bolt nor bar, the one about Madam Lan and the sentient Jingshi. I think the tags scared people away from this one. It's less graphically grim, funnier and more hopeful than it sounds, IMO!
Brave of Heart and Strong of Arm, the one about Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian building a canoe together. This one has a ridiculous title because I had to use a line from a Primadonna on a Moose song. I HAD TO. But I would bet money more than one person thought, "What a terrible title. The writing is surely just as bad," and scrolled on. *g*
Casting about for a third option, and hm, maybe you would like Bitty Writes His Thesis, which is 10000 words of abandoned Check Please WIP. The whole plot is there in outline, it was just too big for me. But I really love the parts I wrote. It's about Bitty researching the Black chefs who originated some of the Southern "family" recipes his family thinks of as theirs.

Date: 2024-03-31 02:35 pm (UTC)I've found myself in small fandoms for the last year plus, so, having been spoiled by some more active fandoms previously, I've got a large heap of fic that it'd be lovely for more people to read. I've chosen three from different fandoms that I'm fond of:
wavelength (4.5k, Under the Skin)
A mostly introspective, character exploration fic, focused on Shen Yi (I know, no one's surprised). With every fandom, if I write fic for long enough eventually I get around to writing one about asexuality, it seems, and this is it for UtS. For the near and dear subject matter, they always mean just a little bit more to me than other fics, not to mention are usually harder to write and get to a point I'm satisfied with them.
in the shifting of your body (4.5k, Lost You Forever)
Honestly, this is a canon I'm sad western fandom hasn't really picked up on at all because the show is both well done and has the kinds of shenanigans fandom tends to like on top of some deeper emotional concerns. (My friend and I have a dismal theory that it's because there's a main female character everything revolves around, rather than more 'shippable' males, but that shall remain unconfirmed and I'd be pleased to be wrong.)
This fic is a quiet, technically canon-compliant H/C piece, focused on a character who is a demon and navigates human vs snake shape. I'm not sure if it entirely makes sense without having seen the show, but I still like it enough to put its hat in the ring.
matchmaker matchmaker, please leave me alone (3.5k Are You Safe)
And a more light-hearted Are You Safe piece to round it off with, though you did read this one already iirc. I don't tend towards humour in my writing (I don't think I'm good at it), but this one is at least amusing, I think. And managed to vent some of my frustration about Zhou You's teenagerishness ;)

As to my end you have in fact recently commented on the fic I’ve been yearning for more comments on, so I am currently satisfied! :-) But here’s the three things I have on ao3 that can be read canon-blind, should you happen to be in the mood for something in their vein (but seriously, ZERO pressure to read any of these, two of them are very long and none are very recent, I’m hardly dying for engagement on any of them):
- the only way for us to go (32.7k, genfic); Weird Arthuriana bildungsroman, centrally concerning a hapless apprentice of Merlin who gets left behind to steward the planet’s magic while the wizard falls into a nine-century slumber. Lots of music as magic, with a bunch of magical worldbuilding in the back half. I’d write some of the historical sections in Part Two differently now, but I’m still pleased with how the magical worldbuilding/fixing and emotional arc of the story turned out. (The last third or so is also more canon-dependent, I wanted to avoid rehashing the canon so it skips a lot of material, but at least one person told me it was still readable canon-blind.)
- science and the human heart (22.5k, G-rated adventure/romance, more or less); contractual magic, small gods, and a wizard lawyer on a work trip. Over five years old now but still one of my favorite things I’ve ever written, and my favorite thing about it is probably the number of strangers it has accidentally convinced to read Max Gladstone’s Craft Sequence, lol. I don’t think you need to know anything about either canon to read it, it’s a self-contained AU and a whole bunch of people have told me that they liked it despite having no familiarity with either the setting or the characters, depending on which tag they found it through.
- that we shouldn’t doubt (8.3k, genfic with a dash of doomed romance); a character abandoned to die on a thin-atmosphere moon runs into an artificial intelligence who keeps him company. Very on the melodramatic side, but I was pleased with how narratively neat it turned out, and with managing to capture the atmosphere of the place that it’s based on. Totally self-contained AU based on a straight-forward premise, more downbeat emotionally.
Oh, and I think I have one Vorkosigan fic you haven’t read? But it hasn’t lacked for attention and isn’t really my best either, not a plotty exercise in the least (what keeps us standing in this view!).
Thanks for the opportunity to chatter about these! <3

Date: 2024-04-01 09:49 am (UTC)Close Your Eyes and See Me - rated T, nearly 90k of Shen Wei/Zhao Yunlan in a universe where Shen Wei teaches art and certainly has nothing to do with any rebellious artwork that might be appearing on the streets, and Zhao Yunlan goes undercover in a new way. You left me a lovely comment on this one <3 and it's definitely the story I'm most happy with, though it hasn't found that many readers.
Sleeping in spring, I missed the dawn - rated T, 11k, Shen Wei/Zhao Yunlan, the one where Zhao Yunlan deals with nightmares after bringing Shen Wei home from Dixing. I wanted to see what would happen if Zhao Yunlan got in dream trouble, the way Chu Shuzhi does on the show, and how he would get himself out of them, wily that he is.
the food of sweet and bitter fancy - rated T, 2k, outside POV on Shen Wei/Zhao Yunlan. My only YOHE story and my only outside POV story so far, where I had a lot of trouble trying to figure out what kind of food the allied army would eat, and probably got everything wrong. That said, it's not really about the food, except as a love language.

I'll be back later to post some things of my own, when I figure out what. :)

Date: 2024-04-05 03:47 pm (UTC)As for my own fics here are two that didn't get many readers, and I totally get why. But I enjoyed writing both of them a lot.
Fly with the wind (1505 words, Original Work, F/F, T rated) - a little piece from a fantasy world with dragons and powerful women.
With a glance of your eyes (1628 words, Guardian, Ye Zun/Zhu Jiu, T rated) - no powers university AU with kissing.

Date: 2024-04-06 06:52 pm (UTC)The first one is for an extremely rare fandom where the canon is very difficult to get hold of: it's an 18th century novel about two crossdressing women gallivanting about Europe. But I think it's very possible to read it canon-blind! Also, I'm pleased with the pastiche. : )

Have you read Naomi Mitchison's Travel Light? If so, I draw your attention to this fic. But if you haven't read canon, it might be better to wait. I do recommend the book very much, though!

I'm not that pleased with the recording, but I am pleased with the words of this filk song (even without rhymes)! I wanted to include something from my current main fandom, and this can be appreciated without canon knowledge, I think.

Date: 2024-05-20 05:48 am (UTC)(I still haven't watched The Rebel, even though it's been on my list for ages, so I shan't read that one of yours yet. I vaguely recall reading some of the Vorkosigan books, but don't really remember them. Do I need to, to enjoy your Vorkosiverse fic?)
It's You I Like, (MCU, 4.6k, T, gen, basically a character study on Tony Stark and Steve Rogers) This was my second ever fic, and did not get nearly as much attention as my first fic, which has always made me a bit sad because I really liked what I did with it. Technically a follow-up to my first fic (I Love Trash)(if you catch the references, well. There's a reason for them.) but not necessary to read the first to understand the second.
Survival, (Guardian, drabble, gen) bb!Shen Wei. I get that a lot of people don't really read drabbles, because they're so short, but... I'm still pretty dang proud of this one, since it was one of the first times I worked from a one-word prompt. Or two-words. I don't remember exactly.
日复一日; Day After Day, (Phantacity, 738 words, gen) I know perfectly well why this got no attention (I probably shouldn't include this one since you beta-read it, thank you again!) - no one really knows the source material, after all. (I just checked. There are 2 English fics that are NOT crossovers for Phantacity. This is one of them.) I do recommend the Phantacity ep with Z1L though. I know clowns aren't everyone's jam, but... he's so damn good? And not a particularly creepy clown? (I dunno if that helps.)
