I don't know any language other than English well enough to even start with translating it (with the possible exception of simple articles in Norwegian about cross-country skiing, which I could probably make a stab at simply because a lot of sports writing is so cliche ), but I find the translation process interesting from the POV of a reader who is hoping to enjoy the end product. To be honest, when it comes to fan translators, I tend to feel that while reinventing the wheel and ideas about fidelity to the original from people that have clearly read even less translation theory than I have - and I have read it only in the context of an English degree 20 years ago - with consequent semi-readable results is certainly an issue (I don't mind the people who are clearly ESL and editing something from Google, it's the ones who claim to be doing something Important with their tortured syntax), a major problem is simply that they are poorly-read in English and haven't the vocabulary to pick the right word or notice that the one they chose isn't a great choice.

Your Yuriko translation project sounds like something I'd love to read. Re. period vocabulary, that sounds like the sort of case where a read by someone familiar with the period in the US who could ID what felt like real howlers to them could be useful, for an outside view.
