whine whinge grumble kvetch 愚痴 抱怨
May. 7th, 2021 06:16 pmDaily life, i.e. whining: I am beginning to feel less like a person who gets headaches occasionally and more like one who is (very very mildly) chronically ill. Ugh. No sympathy required because there are some things I could actually do to ameliorate this that I haven't done, like go to the eye doctor or get a more ergonomic 身体工学/人間工学的 desk setup, so "whining" is where it's at. (There is, however, legitimately nothing I can do about hot bright weather or low-pressure systems...).
Music: No orchestra for the rest of the month at least, thank you local and national governments for continuing to fuck up your handling of the situation as expected. Otherwise, I've been listening to some of the Messiaen piano stuff, preludes and etudes, which are very satisfying in their weird floaty other-dimensional way.
Books: Rereading bits of Antonia Forest. I think End of Term might be the best thing she ever wrote, even though I have to skip over some of the more awful things she does to Nicola because they make me sad; but her hand with characterization and atmosphere is incredible. (From another writer, Jess Geddes suddenly having to leave school for family reasons would seem EXTREMELY contrived, but somehow one never questions it.) And the set pieces, small and large, are fabulous--Nicola and Patrick's day out, Miranda and Miss Cromwell in the theatre gallery, and of course the Play itself, in the midst of which she somehow finds time to focus on the fine points of Rowan's and Patrick's characters as well.
Chinese: Two vaguely food-related idioms that amused me (one from the grammar wiki and one via Liu Chang): 老板炒了他的鱿鱼, the boss fried his squid, = the boss fired him, and 不要吃我的豆腐, don’t eat my tofu, don’t tease me/mess with me.
I've been very slowly rewatching the Lost Tomb Reboot (I'm still in season 1 Warehouse 11, an arc I enjoy even if nobody else does) and having assorted thoughts about Er Jing and Wu Erbai for some reason. Headcanon: they were lovers for many years. Er Jing got his boss into bed mostly as a way of having another hold over him and getting more of his trust; Wu Erbai knew damn well there was something fishy going on and operated on the same principle. (Also both of them got better and better looking as they got older, and at some point they both kind of figured what the hell.) They did not exactly catch feelings...but...yeah. After he injures Wu Erbai, there are nights when Er Jing arranges him so he can sleep comfortably in bed, gets in with him and holds him very, very tenderly all night. Oh dear why is my mind doing this.
While one ought not to be importunate about other people's fic, I always think I'd enjoy another installment in achray's lovely Xiao Mei series, this one featuring Xiao Mei and Wu Erbai; he never had children, and the one family child, his Xiao Xie, was always fixated on Lao San. Xiao Mei has already been through some of the experiences of loss/betrayal, pain and recovery that Wu Erbai was faced with.
Er Jing is absurdly tall. Wu Xie looks like a child next to him, in one hospital scene (ep 21?) and later on when they are walking alone together through the underground passages. I think this has to have been deliberately done, emphasizing that when Wu Xie calls him 京叔 he really means someone who is like an uncle to him, who knew him/sees him as a child. (Especially given Zhu Yilong’s well-documented issues with his own (perfectly adequate) height!)
Writing: Two scenes rewritten more or less to my satisfaction, which makes me...what...one tenth of the way through the necessary revisions? It's possible that the reasonable psychological motive can also be ascribed elsewhere--they are not as justified as they think they are in practical terms, but they have reasons for thinking so--also, what is the greatest difference between L and her father, besides the various obvious ones? (It doesn't have to make sense, don't worry)
Photos: Some jewelflowers (not their real name, which I don't know), yellow irises (?), and more roses; also a couple of alleys and a dilapidated house/warehouse with the kind of windows I can never resist.

Be safe and well.

Date: 2021-05-07 02:54 pm (UTC)I'm also currently watching LTR and just got to the reveal of Er Jing as the traitor and I'm having more feelings about it than I expected to have? Also Wu Erbai in general. *scratches head*

I realized I didn't even think to warn for spoilers! Sorry, I hope the timing was okay. Er Jing in isolation doesn't interest me that much, but I'm fascinated by Wu Erbai's and Wu Xie's feelings about him. As you say, *scratches head*

Date: 2021-05-08 08:40 am (UTC)I'm currently finding myself very frustrated with Wu Sanxing, tbh. The dude has been missing for however many years and he still manages to keep making trouble for everyone (not on purpose, I know, but the show doesn't particularly seem to be trying to make him sympathetic, which is an odd choice given the central plot line is all about looking for him). The entire Wu family dynamics are really interesting, come to think of it.

Absolutely! So much to think about. (I should watch the other Lost Tomb dramas but I already know I'm not going to, on account of my drama watching pretty much begins and ends with Zhu Yilong...).

Date: 2021-05-10 08:40 am (UTC)That's SUCH a mood - I watched The Untamed first, started and didn't finish a couple other cdramas and then watched Guardian. Since then I haven't watched anything that didn't have Zhu Yilong in it and I don't really see that changing. Much to my surprise, since I don't usually get that attached to actors *shakes head*

Congratulations on the revisions!

Mmmmmmm I love working all that stuff out yessssss. So rewarding to help your characters come to those realizations and dealing with them. Much better than dealing with that emotional growth bs in one's own reality.
Love the alley/street shots, as always.

As you say! Also the near gibberish I posted brought to mind a useful plot question which I'd never thought to answer, so chalk one up for DW.

Date: 2021-05-09 01:07 pm (UTC)OOooh you have so many thoughts about lost tomb. <3 (I have none. I just superficially enjoy dramas and pffft characterization...)
I'm *almost* through the warehouse arc (and I DID NOT enjoy it omg it took me half a year to get through it), and loving the show a lot more again now. Almost all my icons are from it right now, which is a sure sign. I havent even read achray's series yet. But I will get through the whole drama eventually. *g*

The good parts are so good, and the other parts are...not. I find season 2 even more uneven in that way... . (I think I enjoy Warehouse 11 for its puzzle-solving qualities, even chopped up by the censors, and because Wu Xie and Xiao Bai have such a complex and entertaining relationship--two ultra-competent trolls with total mutual trust along some lines and absolute distrust in other ways--and Zhu Yilong and Mao Xiaotong sell the hell out of it.

Date: 2021-06-20 07:09 pm (UTC)The main problem I had with the warehouse was the bullying and the uniforms. Both gone now!
I actually started enjoying it again as soon as they went down into the irredeemable goods section. That was fun.
And now we get every single scene with Pangzi, Wu Xie, and Xiao Bai *together*. I am enjoying it so much that I spend all my time taking screenshots. Very counterproductive. :D
I really like Mao Xiaotong in this, and you know I love Chen Minghao, and the combination of those two with Zhu Yilong is making my brain explode.

Date: 2021-06-21 10:45 am (UTC)Yes! They are such a great trio, both in-character and in the way the actors play off one another. (I'm just about there too, having paused my rewatch to watch The Rebel as in my other post; it's good to know that whatever happens with that one, I will have LTR to come back to afterward.)
