Dreams redux, whining, and 聊聊天
Apr. 15th, 2021 04:41 pm・Many thanks for useful and interesting dream-related comments on my last post; I really love it that I can post some idle linguistic curiosity and immediately get responses in TEN different languages. Results: “have dreams” in English, Swedish, Polish, and German, “see dreams” in Japanese, Russian and Finnish, “do/make dreams” in Chinese, French, and Italian, “dream dreams” in Icelandic and Korean, and other variations in Russian, Polish, and Spanish! Good grief. I’m fascinated by the variation within language families, which I wouldn’t have expected.
・Whining: Japan is such a fucking mess right now in corona terms, my city especially. If I see one more elderly person strolling around without a mask on, I might scream.
・I’ve had very little work this week, mostly because of the new fiscal/academic year, but it’s hard not to feel that I’ve somehow offended the work gods (yes, I can be kind of abrasive in my work personality from time to time, but I don’t think I said anything particularly obnoxious recently...?). I worked a lot in February and March, a week or three without much in April won’t matter, but it makes me feel extremely at loose ends. The smart thing would be to say “fuck work until it comes in” and do something boring but useful (sorting out papers, etc. etc.) or interesting and personal (Yuriko, or the rest of the books-I-want-to-translate stack). sigh
・Fannish: I was watching one of Liu Chang’s livestreams, this one dating from last summer when the Lost Tomb thing started showing; in honor of which he was wearing Liu Sang’s sharp suit and had invited most of the main cast to join in via a Zoom-type thing. Bonus unexpected Long-ge! Without C or E subtitles I could only follow bits, but the general sense from Zhu Yilong was “大家好,我是朱一龙,I play Wu Xie...um...what else should I say?”, on brand.
・The other day’s complaint about mismatched musical tastes aside, my brain seems to like coming up with songs for MDZS/CQL characters; one of the songs I listen to on my morning run is “Nightswimming,” which somehow brings to mind post-canon Jiang Cheng for me.
・Photos: Several flowers I don’t know by name (including one that looks like a transformed butterfly) and some lilacs, ubiquitous where I grew up and much rarer (and much earlier-blooming) here; but the fragrance is the same. Also a really fancy city manhole, a spring turtle, and, well, the last photo speaks for itself.

Be safe and well.

Date: 2021-04-16 07:35 am (UTC)Lilacs are rare here! More common up north, I assume, but I got lucky finding one. Their smell makes me so, so nostalgic.

Date: 2021-04-15 11:50 am (UTC)I just read "dreamed a dream" in an English book, from a good writer, so that variant is definitely there, as well.

Date: 2021-04-16 07:36 am (UTC)Yes--now that you mention it, I think I've run across "dreamed a dream" in English too, as a poetic/literary locution. Interesting!

Date: 2021-04-15 05:00 pm (UTC)Nightswimming is a song on several of my playlists, but I'm not sure I'd ever have linked it with Jiang Cheng. If you were prepared to tell me more I'd be really interested.
It's such sad song. Oh wait, I get a bit if it. "And what if there were two / Side by side in orbit" Yunmeng heroes?
Plus, okay the swimming thing and Lotus Pier...
Of course God hangs out in Osaka. She enjoys Dotonburi.

Date: 2021-04-16 07:42 am (UTC)Yes, you picked out the points that brought Jiang Cheng to mind for me, along with "You, I thought I knew you/You, I cannot judge/You, I thought you knew me..." which kind of evokes the sad confusion about Wei Wuxian that Jiang Cheng seems to have by the end of canon, "...they cannot see me naked" (Jiang Cheng's pride, not to speak of his fancy clothes!), and so on.
LOL at God in Dotombori! Why not?

Date: 2021-04-15 05:19 pm (UTC)Your fancy manhole cover reminded me of this news item from several years ago: "Japanese firm releases manhole cover collectors' cards." Clearly you are not alone in your appreciation! It reminds me of a friend of my mother's who is an enthusiastic historical brick collector. Truly there is something for everyone.

Date: 2021-04-16 07:37 am (UTC)I often don't notice them, but it's true that the manholes here tend to the fancy! Thanks for the link.

Date: 2021-04-18 12:36 pm (UTC)fwiw, it's totally normal around here not to wear masks outside. We only wear them in stores, and outside we just stay far enough apart to "feel safe". Although I can imagine there are more people around in Japan?
the general sense from Zhu Yilong was “大家好,我是朱一龙,I play Wu Xie...um...what else should I say?”, on brand.
OMG yes. :DDD (I will take a link for it, anyway, though, if you have one? Or a hint what to search for? I have seen one team livestream, but that's probably not the one, because i don't remember it being hosted by Liu Chang...?)
Have you seen the birthday livestream? Also very on brand, definite cuteness overload. How is he so cute?
All the pics are cute! Great pothole indeed!

Date: 2021-04-18 11:40 pm (UTC)At least in urban areas, yes, we live in very cramped spaces (and like it that way, fair enough), and masks are needed. Also because my city has its worst numbers since the start of the pandemic right now, with no vaccination schedule to speak of, sigh.
I will take a link for it, anyway, though, if you have one?
Here you go! With bonus Chen Minghao among others as well.

I did see ZYL's birthday livestream! a) adorable, and b) gave me deep thoughts about the nature of performers (just rambling at you here, pay no attention). Zhu Yilong is like a pianist or something, immensely skilled and dedicated but also not a natural performer when away from his instrument (= roles, singing, etc.); Liu Chang, on the other hand, never saw a camera he didn't want to flirt with, whether playing a role or not. Interesting different approaches.

Date: 2021-04-22 06:42 pm (UTC)We have a schedule, but no vaccine. /o\ Right now, we have 20% with their first shot, but they're all over-80s, and then some school teachers, nurses, and doctors. But full vaccination only for 6% of the population. So we're looking at a lot more time until we get to a satisfactory result. *sigh*
(But I am feeling better knowing that we're not the only ones. It feels like my whole flist is exploding with people getting vaccinated, and we're so far from it around here. I know nobody. (Which of course is because I don't know anybody over 80. Pfft.))
Here you go! With bonus Chen Minghao among others as well.
Thank you! I think that is the one I've also seen before - just glimpses of it, I haven't sat through the whole thing, since it's unsubbed. Our fate is so tragic. ;D
(just rambling at you here, pay no attention)
Oh nononono, I love talking about that kind of thing. I am very interested in the behind-the-scenes things on shows, and in actors and the acting profession. You can always talk to me about that (although I have no first-hand experience except a few stints in school theatre in fifth grade or so :D - but they left an impression).
Zhu Yilong is not a natural performer when away from his instrument
Yes! He can make anything believable on screen, but once the cameras turn off, he immediately turns into a shy cinnamon roll. :D
I think these kinds of performers have it harder, because they don't get a kick from standing on stage - they like the end result, but getting there is not easy. And I think those suffer more from the pressure and rejection that kind of job brings with it, too. It's an additional burden to carry. (I just want to hug him a lot, every time I see how unwell he feels on stage.)
Liu Chang is the type that in German is called "Rampensau" - hard to translate literally. "Rampe" means "ramp" but here stands for "stage", and "Sau" is a pig. I think it alludes to another idiom, "die Sau rauslassen" (let the pig out) = "to let go". So it describes people who really get going once they are on stage.
(I'm sure explaining German idioms to you is up your alley. :D)

Date: 2021-04-23 01:28 am (UTC)Yes, exactly. I mean, I'm glad more people I know are getting vaccinated! this is a good thing! I just wish this country (and yours while I'm at it) would get its act together to do the same!

This is such an interesting topic to explore. (I should ask my mother, an introvert who was a professional actress for a while, about her views....) You know what I realized is that, as much as I enjoy the RPF people write, what I most want to read is gen RPF, or the actual non-fiction version if it were available--I would be delighted with 10K of Zhu Yilong and Chen Minghao talking about acting, for instance. Harder to come by.
(I just want to hug him a lot, every time I see how unwell he feels on stage.)
I KNOW. As fun as it is to watch him, one wants to tell him, honey, just turn the camera off and go play your guitar for a while...
(I'm sure explaining German idioms to you is up your alley. :D)
It is! I love this kind of linguistic anecdote, and the audience-invigorated pig made me laugh. I'll remember that phrase. (Doesn't fit the 朱=猪 joke at all though ;) ).

Lolol, took me a while to remember that one, and... no. Not at all. :D
