・I noticed that in English we have dreams, in Japanese we see dreams (夢を見る), and in Chinese we do(/make) dreams (做梦). Where do other languages stand on this?

tinny made a wonderful set of Anki decks based on the HSK-in-Guardian vocabulary list! [業務連絡: Working on the single-character ones now, update to follow.]

・In a recent academic paper, I found myself unable to resist translating one innocuous phrase as “they felt that these were not the resources they were looking for.” I wonder if anyone reading it will get the joke. [See photo below!]

・AO3 is apparently phasing out tone markings on its character tags; I noticed that some versions of the “Shěn Wēi” tag retain their tones, and while I’m sure it’s just a temporary tagging thing, it’s hard not to feel that Shen Wei is very concerned with having the right tone shown for his name, because Wēi, not Wéi, is the name Kunlun gave him...

Question: is it possible to download (some) episodes of the Lost Tomb Reboot, and if so how would I, a person with no technical expertise, go about it? Or is this one of those questions that ought not to be asked in public? (Will screen responses/edit post if requested).

Photos: Assorted images from a recent walk, including what seems to be simultaneously a temple and a shrine (even in highly syncretist Japan, this is not typical) and a company I am not sure I want to do business with.

you 'see' dreams in russian (я видел сон) but also you dream/sleep the dreams (мне снилась кошка), in passive voice.

In Spanish it's "to dream with" - soñar con. I've always thought that was a lovely phrase.

I love the view of the temple/shrine, and those young kaede leaves...!

If you let me know what episodes you want (presuming it's not all at once) I can arrange for them to be available to you. ♥

In Icelandic (I'm 95% certain I'm right about this) you dream a dream!

In Swedish, which is of course closely related, you can dream a dream, but more commonly you have a dream. I put in "jag hade en dröm" to Google translate, but it still gave me back "mig dreymdi draum" in Icelandic. So maybe you can't have a dream in Icelandic...

Lovely photos!

they felt that these were not the resources they were looking for.

Haha, I can't blame you! I have taken to commenting to some of my students with "You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means." :)

Sorry I can't help with the downloads.

Oh, I *really* like the phrasing of making dreams. That's lovely.

it’s hard not to feel that Shen Wei is very concerned with having the right tone shown for his name, because Wēi, not Wéi, is the name Kunlun gave him...
How am I having feels about an AO3 tag now???

That tulip and those maple leaves are gorgeous. Thank you for sharing your photographs. They're always so beautiful.

I believe you dream a dream in Korean and Polish! But you can also have a dream in Polish.

I was very surprised at that too!

(In Polish it's mieć sny (to have dreams) or śnić (to dream) but you can say śnią się sny (to dream dreams--but in the sense that the dreams are taking the action, a reflexive verb, and of course you have to conjugate all of those forms, because Polish)

In French we also do/make dreams. (And same for nightmares! We do/make nightmares. I wonder if there is a language with different verbs for dreams and nightmares.)

the different dream versions in different languages are fascinating - as always.

Thank you so much for your help, I'll do my best to incorporate them into the decks asap.

I am happy that tone markers are going away, they're impossible to search for and select. Even if Shen Wei might not like it. :)

Or is this one of those questions that ought not to be asked in public?

You can ask, but it's inadvisable to answer. :D But it reminds me that we wanted to watch an ep or two together, didn't we? I'm still up for that - if maybe not this week. :D

Never think that pics weigh your posts down, they're awesome - and the preview images are small and the originals are wonderful, and dw may be old but it does image embedding right.

I especially like the geometric shadows in the third one, and the contrast between old and new in the fourth. <3
