have you come across 鬼东西 (rough translation: "cursed thing")? New to me! I should try and make a list of the 鬼 words sometime, I was just looking up 搞鬼...
I have a bad habit of typing 'yi mi' while on my Japanese keyboard and wondering why 意味 won't come up, myself! strange things happen in that transitional slippage between languages. lol yes, absolutely! Mostly I can compartmentalize, but the more Chinese I learn the more weirdly my brain reacts.
Very glad my riff on your post worked for you, and "open-source" is much appreciated! <3 I still want to do some more thinking/writing about the concept, but I thought of it just as I was starting to write up the Chizuko/Chizuru book and it fit so perfectly I couldn't resist. I think my take is a lot more haphazard than yours ;) (Emic and etic I actually learned about from a comment on a fic somewhere, of all things, and it feels interestingly related...)
I like stories where the geopolitical seeps into the personal and people's interior lives, to borrow [personal profile] geraineon 's term. I defo have come across ones with issueficcy overtures, but sometimes as an allegory or metaphor for wider politics they work. Agree agree! I did some thinking about this when I was (briefly) in grad school, studying prewar women writers in Japan, mostly left-wing, and the way they kind of lived the metaphors they were writing about. I should read a lot more before I try to write about it, but it's so fascinating to think about.
