the task of summarizing in Chinese from memory does sound... quite advanced. Remembering the plot of the story isn't so bad--they're pretty linear and fairly predictable, at least the few I've tried so far--but trying either to remember the exact phrases used, or come up with grammatically correct alternate versions, is stressful...
This sounds very relatable, but I'm surprised it would still happen when you know Japanese so well! I do find that the more I study Mandarin (and I'm still not even studying it that much!), the more I start to see certain characters and think of the Mandarin pronunciation first. It happens all right! I tend to go back and forth between work (Japanese-related) and Anki or other Chinese stuff, so I think my brain has trouble making the switch on the spot...
