・If anyone wants to be added to my “postcards at random intervals list,” let me know; along with the non-random-intervals parents, my list already has a few online friends plus a former student (we got in the habit when he was doing his military service), and a few more are just as easy. (DM me w/address as needed)

・Still very slowly reading Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint, and getting slightly teary over Kim Dokja’s inability to just relax and enjoy himself with his Company. (Quote of the week: “As things stood, I couldn't really tell apart whether we were in the [Journey to the West] or [Kim Dokja's Company's Disorganised Great Adventure Get-Together].”)

・Oh wow, a huge firework just went off outside the window! Somebody must be letting them off in the park. More please!

・At yesterday’s orchestra concert I saw Nao-kun, a fellow cellist’s kid I’ve known since I could carry him on my shoulders; he’s now a high school senior and twice my size. “He has a question for you,” said his mom Yuki—he’s on the autism spectrum and not good at starting conversations himself—so I said “Go for it,” and he took a deep breath and said “Yankees or Mets?”
(Mets, incidentally. My father was old enough to be a Brooklyn Dodgers fan and considered the Mets the next best thing.)

・Rereading: Toni Morrison’s Jazz, which I love a lot even though I don’t always feel I have the right to enjoy it. So many wonderful lines, though. Alice Manfred’s “No one’s askin you to take it. I’m sayin make it, make it!” and Joe’s “I didn’t fall in love, I rose in it,” and the lovely, lovely declaration of love on the last page.

On a very different plane, Murder Must Advertise, which I think might actually beat out Gaudy Night as my favorite Sayers. Workplace mysteries where the author really knows the workplace in question are the best. (My other go-to authors for this are Mary Kelly and Janet Neel, does anyone have any other recommendations?)

・Writing: I have a bunch of ideas for guardian_wishlist, we’ll see which of them gel over the next couple weeks.

・Photos: Somebody else’s morning glories today, so envious (although mine are managing a couple of stripy blooms a day, knock wood). Also a hibiscus and a summer maple.

Be safe and well.
