・ I actually have quite a lot of work right now (in related news: if, like some of my current associates, I routinely handed in work one to three weeks after the deadline, I would very shortly not have any work at all. Literally some of my best friends are academics, but wow do they ever live in a different world), but my mind/body haven’t adjusted to “really quite busy” yet and I’m still andante when I need to be allegro.

・ Long ago in one of my college music theory classes we had to listen to the Messiaen piano piece "Modes de valeurs et d'intensités," which is super-serialized (it's...hard to explain, basically every aspect of the piece is planned out by the numbers, I honestly don't remember the rules any more). I was expecting to find it mechanical and tiresome or else 20th-c.-weird and boring, but I actually LOVED it, and still do. I'm fond of Messiaen in general--the trumpet parts from "Turangalila" are lovely and jazzy, and I like the piano preludes and especially #6, "Cloches d’angoisse et larmes d’adieu" (there’s something in it that makes me think of “Bess, you is my woman now”), although he’s a bit of an acquired taste.
Also, my old colleague Misa put me onto Andy Akiho’s Ping Pong Concerto , which although not my thing musically is quite a ride.

・ (Re)reading lately: assorted book rambling )

・ I amused myself with a very short fic (see AO3) about Li Qian and Lu Ruomei and Jiajia and Xiao Quan; I feel like I’m not up to working out longfic-worthy plots (canon divergence, post-canon etc.) but I can’t resist wanting to play with the people dynamics.

Be safe and well.
