Yuletide letter 2019
Nov. 2nd, 2019 06:59 pmAmended from past years:
Thank you for writing something for me. With the exception of the do-not-like stuff, please take any and all of this as optional suggestions only, and do what works for you. Not all of the stuff I like, for instance, may be applicable to all the fandoms I've requested; choose what makes sense to you.
Do not like: darkfic in general, incest, humiliation, NC-17 for either violence or sex (no moral objections, it's just not what I enjoy reading), blatant out-of-characterness, rape/dubcon, Christmas themes (again, not opposed to their existence in general, just not Christian myself).
Enjoy in particular: snappy dialogue, families of choice, playing with language(s), cuddling, work (in all definitions) and people being competent at it, futurefic, scenes from everyday life.
I tend to prefer genfic, but have no objection at all to background romance/relationships, or even a romance fic with a high gen ratio (not all-shippy all the time), as it were. Any pairing (m/f, m/m, f/f, threesome, you name it) is fine as long as you can make me believe in it.
By fandom/characters:
Ryswyck (L.D. Inman): Any
If you offered this, it means someone else has actually discovered this book! Yay! I don’t have specific prompts so much as I’d like to read more about the characters, during, before, or after the events of the novel. Slice-of-life while they’re still students, events from the book shown from a different perspective (I’d love to read Stevens’ or Cameron’s take on Speir and/or Douglas), epistolary, how the history books looked at them a hundred years later, an exchange of snarky reports over some relatively trivial issue, Stevens trying to get all three of the others into bed (sequentially or all at once)…your call. Any other characters welcome too.
The Steerswoman (Rosemary Kirstein): Steffie
This is the request I make every year, and I still want it. Steffie is my favorite character in the whole series, against quite stiff competition, so pretty much anything where he gets to shine would be great. I’d love to see Steffie learning how to be a steersman from Zenna and also working to balance his ambitions with how the people of Alemeth have always seen him. Maybe casefic of some kind for the two of them, either something happening in Alemeth or something old that emerges as they sort the archives? Or Steffie traveling out of Alemeth for the first time in his life? Or…whatever interests you about him J
The Story of Owen Series (E.K. Johnston): Any
I love Siobhan, her tenacity and her sense of humor and her music—as an orchestra geek myself I would be delighted to read a completely music-focused fic. I like Courtney, and I’d like to see what Prairie Fire looks like through her eyes. Kaori only gets a little bit of pagetime, but I like her “bass clarinet” low-key wry steadiness, and if you are reasonably well versed in Japan stuff I’d like to know more about her. I’d like to know how Sadie sees Lottie’s efforts to change the paradigm, and where she goes with it after the books. Futurefic for any or all of the characters is always good, whether it’s two days or twenty years later (or both). Also, I am not Canadian but I enjoy the emphasis on Canadian-ness which is part of the worldbuilding, so go to town there if you want to.
Juniper, Gentian and Rosemary (Pamela Dean): Alma, Erin, Becky, Steph
I’m always about equally fascinated and frustrated by this book, and what I like most about it are Gentian’s four friends, each with her own take on the themes of the novel—femininity and gender in general, religion, art and science, conventionality and unconventionality, romance, togetherness and solitude, what you have in common with people and what makes you different from them. I’d love a missing scene from the book, futurefic (AU, fix-it fic, or otherwise), or anything where the four of them (and Gentian if you want, and any other characters who interest you) do something or talk about something or get involved in something…I’m sorry to be so vague, but I leave the rest up to you.
A Memory Called Empire (Arkady Martine): Mahit Dzmare, Three Seagrass, Yskandr Aghavn
I would really like to read about them during a short interval when EVERYTHING isn’t happening at once. I love the worldbuilding we see for daily life in the Empire, and would like to see what might happen if Mahit(+Yskandr) were to spend time back there when things were less fraught, along with Three Seagrass. Or…well, whatever you’d like to write about them. Any other characters also welcome. Mahit/Three Seagrass delightful but not necessary according to your preference.
Again, thanks for writing and I look forward to seeing what happens. J.
