(Are 核桃 and 合桃 pronounced the same in Cantonese like they are in Mandarin?)

Not quite, but they do sound very similar (核 is hat6, 合 is hap6).

Possibly there are Chinese learners of English currently groaning about why English says "pecans" sometime and "hickory" other times?

Probably! And I'm now wondering what a non-pecan hickory-nut pie would taste like...

My guess is a combination of an underqualified translator with mostly textbook-only experience, plus being underpaid and on a short deadline.

Ah. Understandable but a shame. Revising it could be a fun project, though. :)
