Come to find out that (I think) in Taiwan 胡桃 is pecan and 核桃 is walnut, while on the mainland 胡桃 is walnut and 山核桃 is pecan…give me strength!

Hah, that is kind of a mess. XD (Just looked up the Cantonese, and apparently they have the same 山核桃 = pecan as on the mainland, but a whole other word, 合桃, for walnut. Even more chaos. XD)

”And he needs us like he needs two left legs,” Bernard remarked, jerking around in the hammock as he tried to eat a jelly comes out as “我们对他来说就像左膀右臂。“伯纳德从吊床上一跃而起,去拿冰淇淋

Oh man, yeah it seems like the translator didn't actually get what was going on there. Is this an older translation? I feel like with the internet at one's fingertips, it would be pretty easy to figure out what "two left legs" means, but I can imagine that pre-internet it might not have been that easy to figure out idiomatic stuff if you weren't a native speaker... (though obviously that doesn't make the bad translation any less unfortunate...)

Lovely Zhu Yilong links, thank you for sharing. <3 (Also hoping for less RL whump for him, jeez.)
